In the autumn of 2013 Pastelería Tolosana launched an initiative aimed at providing young creators with a platform for the dissemination of their artistic proposals in drawing and illustration, which would help them in their promotion and professional development. It was through the 1st Sweet Illustration Competition, a pioneering event in our country, which sought to combine the art of illustration with the art of confectionery.
The initiative had a great impact, both in terms of the number of works and authors participating in it, as well as the dissemination obtained at regional and national level. The participation of a jury of a high professional level and wide recognition in the academic and artistic sphere also contributed to this.
A total of 64 authors from all over Spain, Barcelona, Alicante, Bizkaia, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén, Madrid, Santander, Valencia, Zaragoza and Huesca, submitted 71 works to the competition.
Ten works were selected by the Jury as finalists, based on their quality, the technique used, as well as their suitability and compliance with the theme required in the competition rules. A winner and a runner-up were chosen from among them, taking into account their depth, uniqueness and the techniques used.
All the works submitted can be seen on the website of the company Pastelería Tolosana, and the finalist works were exhibited in the Exhibition Hall of the Palacio de Villahermosa in Huesca, headquarters of the social work of Ibercaja, in January 2014; in Pastelería Tolosana at Camino las Torres nº 10 in Zaragoza, during the month of May 2014; and subsequently they were exhibited in the town of Almudévar (headquarters of the organising company) last June and at the end of September they will be exhibited again, in the city of Zaragoza. The aim is to bring the illustration works of young creators to the general public and to promote their recognition.
The success and the repercussion achieved by this initiative leave no doubt that Pastelería Tolosana will continue to promote this type of initiative in favour of the creative and cultural development of our society. For this reason, the II Sweet Illustration Contest is launched, with the same objectives and the same enthusiasm, with a greater commitment to raising awareness of the initiative, especially through the internet and social networks, and with the creation of a new category: the Special Prize. TrenzArtefor the best illustration based on or related to the renowned pastry creation "Trenza de Almudévar".
