Typographic Safari

Published on 2 December 2019

From the subject Typography and Layout I, a guided walk through the city centre of Zaragoza took place on 12 November, analysing old signs such as El Maño, located in Calle Alfonso I, Libros, located in Calle Fuenclara, or the most spectacular of all, Herboristería Grillo, located in Calle Arquitecto Magdalena.

The Typographic Safari is a way of getting to know the typographic tradition of the city of Zaragoza through its historical signs, analysing them and stopping to examine their shapes and compositions, handmade on different supports using ancient techniques such as gilding on glass or hand-painted. The graphic solution of each one of them is different, characteristic and personal and gives the shop its distinction from the rest, something that has been lost nowadays. In short, a reflection on the use of the brand and the signage of local shops, an opportunity to learn about lettering and typography through observation in the urban environment.

In addition, photographs and videos were taken and shared on social networks with the hashtag #safariesda so that pupils could collaborate in real time and share the city's typographic culture.

A very interesting activity which has served both to reflect and to put into practice new designs in the classroom and thus be more aware of the use of typography based on its function, no doubt to repeat.

We leave you the link to be able to walk around and do the tour if you were unable to attend: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1B1Kl8DyK0ZAEomPH4Yt2QoNn3SYnDnFK&usp=sharing
