Cultural Rights Day at ESDA and Exhibition Andar de Nones-ESDA

Published on 9 October 2025

Under the name "Yo es que de cultura no entiendo" ("I don't understand culture"), a conference on cultural rights was held on 26 September.

In particular, inequality in the exercise of the fundamental rights of all people in access, participation and decision-making in culture. The deficiencies of the current system were discussed, which stem from socio-economic factors that are the result of inefficient public policies that perpetuate inequalities. Far from remaining in the limbo of ideas and data, the conference brought real projects that promote the participation in culture of the most "improbable".

The talks and discussions, organised by PROCURA (Asociación de Profesionales de la Cultura en Aragón) with Diego Garulo, took place in the assembly hall of the ESDA (with the collaboration of the Head of External Relations, Luís García Alamán) and in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the University of Zaragoza (thanks to Jorge Jiménez of the Master's Degree in Cultural Heritage Management).

In the morning, Nicolas Barbieri (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) gave an interesting and much needed lecture entitled "The right to participate in cultural life: are we talking about inequalities?" where he explained among other things the importance of the postal code in access, participation and decision making in culture.

This was followed by the discussion: "Experiencias situadas: ¿Qué papel juegan los profesionales de la cultura?" between Virginia Martínez (Teatro Comunitario), Cecilia Casas Romero (ESDA DESIS Lab), Kira Rivarés (Orquesta Escuela) and Nicolás Barbieri, moderated by Saul Esclarín.

Simultaneously, in the ESDA hall, the educational intervention in Social Design co-created by the artists of Andar de Nones and the students of ESDA, entitled "We open a Space for Cultural Rights", was exhibited.

In the afternoon, Nuria Salvador gave a talk on the project "Recartografías: custodia del territorio y cultura popular en el Mas Blanco", which was followed by a second discussion on "Experiencias situadas. Practices against inequality in culture" between Sámar Ahmad (Andar de Nones), David Giménez (Enlatamus) and Nuria Salvador (Recartografías), moderated by Diego Garulo, organiser of the event.
