Graphic Design

The graphic designer is a creator whose activity has as its objective the use of graphic language to generate messages and communicate content of a diverse nature with different media and for different communication channels. The main areas where he develops his activity: corporate and visual identity, editorial design, graphic production, packaging design, art direction in advertising, audiovisual design, television graphics, multimedia design, interaction design, web design, environmental designer: graphics and communications applied to space, design of didactic material, research and teaching.

Basic Design: Shape and Colour I

Students are introduced to the basic processes of image elaboration in order to learn the principles of composition. The fundamental concepts of design are analysed and studied, basic for the approach to professional knowledge of design.

Backbone subject of the first year of graphic design. It brings together all the knowledge and skills acquired by students in the different subjects.
The aim of this first semester is to introduce students to the development of graphic design projects, and to acquire an appropriate project methodology, according to a briefing and with a demand for quality in the results.

The course aims to provide students with sufficient resources to be able to bring to a two-dimensional plane an idea that serves to solve a graphic communication problem, at any stage of the creative process. To this end, practical drawing exercises of observation and ideation will be carried out using different techniques of graphic-plastic expression.

It introduces students to the study of design from the field of linguistic structuralism, visual perception, and the methodology of the design process, to the language of the graphic image. It introduces students to the production of visual messages and to research into the uses of the image as a source of visual communication.

The subject of Computer Media II is understood as a fundamental and common subject within the different artistic and design disciplines. It is a continuation of Computer Media I. Within the subject to which it is attached, it aims to deal with the techniques of representation and communication of the graphic design project by means of the computer tools of the speciality, initiating the student in the communication between different environments, programmes and applications. The aim is to introduce students to computer equipment, digital techniques, functions and technological requirements of the speciality, as well as the theoretical and practical foundations of vector and bitmap images, word processing and desktop publishing.

Design Management I is an introductory subject in the management processes associated with the profession of designer. It provides the theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the techniques and tools necessary for understanding the social environment and the legal situation of the profession. In the same way, the course focuses on the contracting tools available to designers, the relationship of the professional with the different administrations and other basic design project management skills. Through the proposal of directed activities, students are introduced to the field of design research and its methodology, and to the writing of academic texts.

You learn to value and control the expressive capacity of typography in order to achieve better and more effective graphic results.

Computer media applied to graphic design/I

The course is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the digital tools necessary for any graphic designer. It will review the essential aspects in the knowledge of illustration, image retouching and layout programmes. Certain advanced techniques and processes will be studied in depth, as well as the layout of documents.

The eminently practical subject focuses on the realisation of projects where the aim is to develop professionalism and technical quality.
All exercises will simulate complex real projects, so the student will not only solve partial aspects, but will be confronted with the whole design process, from constraints to production.
Creativity and innovative solutions will be encouraged, but more consideration will be given to solutions that best fit the constraints and problems posed, together with appropriate adaptation to the means of production.
In the design process, there will always be an evaluation and verification of the decisions taken, so that no aspect is left unresolved.
All of this taking into account that the decisions and solutions are compatible and fully viable for production. To this end, special attention will be paid to the student's correct mastery of the technical and technological aspects.
The proposed exercises are subject to modification if the progress of the course so advises.
The intention is to work individually during the first four-month period, but not in the two projects of the second four-month period, as it is considered of interest that the students get used to working in a team, to listen to each other's assessments and to share out the roles.
The work may be coordinated with other subjects, and the latter may participate in the realisation of some aspects of the project. The eminently practical nature of the subject should allow and encourage students to apply the knowledge acquired in other subjects.
The defence of the work will be encouraged by means of public analysis and the production of reports.

The course focuses on enhancing the student's ability to interpret a text or concept through the effective and original creation of narrative, informative or persuasive images depending on the graphic project in which they are included. Its value as a communicative, creative and experimental resource is explored in depth.

This subject provides theoretical and practical knowledge for the professional practice of Design as an employee. It studies the legislation that regulates the employment relationship and the conflicts that arise from it.

Knowledge and control of the fundamental elements involved in the layout of a document: typographies, grids, images, margins, formats. Graphic and typographic decisions are made according to the type of document and the target audience.
Different layout scenarios are carried out to put into practice how the resources work in each case.

The course aims to teach the student different computer graphics techniques of modelling and three-dimensional representation necessary for the graphic designer, both in the ideation phase and in the communication of the project. Modelling techniques, application of materials and textures, lighting and rendering will be developed.

Editorial design/I

Theoretical-practical subject. Lectures are combined with practical classes where students put into practice what they have learnt in class; debates in assembly, public exhibitions of the work tackled, etc.

Theoretical-practical subject. Theoretical classes are combined with practical classes, complex editorial projects are carried out in which creativity, design and layout are combined. Students are introduced to real editorial projects where they put into practice what they have learnt in class. Experimental and exploratory projects are proposed. Debates in assemblies, public exhibitions of the work tackled, etc.
This course includes the participation of professional experts in the field of editorial design in Aragon.

Real exhibitions and didactic graphic works are analysed and realised, including information and promotion, elements of continuity and signage, and the application of visual identity.

Public speaking: presentation and defence of a final design degree project (optional)

The objectives of the subject are to encourage creativity in Design through Photography, learning the photographic resources for an image with a specific graphic purpose, and applying the appropriate setting, lighting and treatment of textures, surfaces, brightness and volumes. The aim of the course is to train in the application of different digital and analogue techniques.
In-depth approach to branding in movement and the technical and conceptual analysis of motion graphics projects. It deals with the realisation of motion graphics projects in all phases of production and for different devices and media.

Handmade bookbinding workshop (optional)

The development of this subject contributes to students acquiring the following knowledge:
To know the basic vocabulary, the most common specific materials for bookbinding and their expressive languages.
Skilful use of basic tools and procedures specific to the workshop.
Produce simple works, using the workshop's own techniques and plastic values.
Expressing creativity through the final finishes of an editorial product.
The final objective of this workshop is to transmit the pleasure of producing attractive and well-constructed editorial products and to provide the student with resources for the practice of bookbinding as a stimulus to develop personal skills, imagination and creative freedom.

This subject aims to provide students with techniques and experience in writing, to enable them to write persuasive texts and relevant content. Creativity techniques (optional)

The work will be based on the analysis of creative strategy processes.
The student is provided with new guidelines to structure action strategies to face the project, from the primary approaches, methodologies and new forms of representation-communication.

Character design and animation is a growing field thanks to its applications in videogame design, creation of mascots, avatars, metaverse, etc.
The course is presented as a complete journey through organic modelling, the creation of textures and mapping, and an introduction to 3D animation. In this way, students will acquire a global vision of all the professional fields that are included in this emerging profession called "Character artist".

The course develops in an intensive way the crucial aspects of packaging design that have not been dealt with extensively before in the degree, namely materials and production processes. All legal aspects, briefs, market orientation will be dealt with, but taking for granted what has already been dealt with in other courses of the degree, in order to develop processes that end up in the production of professional quality prototypes.

This course offers specialisation in advanced publishing with an experimental character and an adult audience. Special publishing projects will be developed: luxury, collector's, emotional, niche, etc.

The course explores the possibilities of different visual languages applied to typography, in order to control, renew and optimise its expressive capacity in large bodies and short texts. Practical application of experimental typography to the solution of personal or business projects.

Learn to generate the general atmosphere of a sequential image project, defining aspects such as aesthetics, tone, colour palette, temporal location, etc.
